Civil De-Construction, One Tweet At A Time

D. S. Mitchell

On July 26, 2017 President Trump tweeted: “After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States government will not accept or allow……”
That was the president of the United States starting his morning with an ominous tweet. Then for the next nine minutes there was no follow-up tweet. His audience (the world) was left to wonder what would follow those six dots. The reporters at Buzzfeed confirmed that Pentagon staffers and officials alike believed Trump was about to announce a strike against North Korea or another Afghan military strike.

After a mind bending nine minute wait, the president finally continued his tweet, “transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the U.S. military. Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgenders in the military would entail.”

My first thoughts, 1) the tweet is both too organized and clearly written to have been originally authored by Trump, and instead, I suspect was the work of Steve Bannon or Stephen Miller. 2)  the writer acts as if transgender military service was not already a fact of life.  If this thoughtless tweeted policy is implemented, which I assume they will attempt, it will negatively affect an estimated 15,000 service personnel who openly identify as transgender.

Beyond that it is outrageous to make policy without consultation with advisors on such matters, but his ban is probably unconstitutional. Everyone inside the administration admits surprise at the president’s abrupt change of existing military policy without consultation with apparently anyone before he chose to announce his decision via Twitter.

Trump’s tweets are often sudden and explosive. With the announcement of his transgender ban he made an immoral and ill-conceived ban on transgender troops–not a call to war as many had feared. But it was a fucking long nine minutes.

Trump is a bully addicted to Twitter. He is unable to stop tweeting. Whenever someone or something angers or frustrates him he jumps on his Twitter account and throws out whatever strikes his mood. Often his outrage is a reflection of something he has seen on television. The ferocity of his mindless attacks often continue day after day as he bullies and attacks the target of his rage, in true bullying form.

Supporters have begged him to stop. His lawyers have asked him to stop. Congressional leaders have advised him to stop. Fed-up voters are telling pollsters they want him to stop. It seems to be a growing consensus that we all want Trump to stop twittering, now.

Despite the continuing self-destructive behavior he cannot be stopped. On Twitter he contradicts his advisors and surrogates, he starts irrational fights, he bullies the RussiaGate investigators, and abuses rebellious congressmen.

Trump’s behavior is undermining decades of American foreign policy. How are the American people able to tell what is policy and what is the idle finger tapping of a frustrated, angry and mentally disturbed man.

Over the last week with his comments to reporters and his twitter rants he has literally interfered with legislation and the operation of the United States government. From day-to-day the national conversation is being derailed by the loose fingered president who finds it necessary to unload every thought that crosses his empty head.

Trump’s tweets unnerve world financial markets, “antagonize allies, emboldened dictators”, empower white supremacist activities and demean Senators and Federal judges.

The founding fathers of our nation feared populism and political parties. The founders equated such movements as dangerous to the country. The qualities that those men valued in a president were, “political restraint, personal modesty, self-discipline, and deference to the legislature” all qualities worth promoting and defending. Unfortunately, Donald Trump lacks all the qualities that the founding fathers saw as prerequisites.

Trump sees the Twitter platform as his means “to get the honest and unfiltered message out,” to his devoted cult-like followers. My question on this issue: Is the president’s twitter activity benefiting the country? My off the cuff answer is, absolutely not. In fact, I see his tweets as reckless and dangerous and are causing worldwide havoc, from the Korean peninsula to Qatar.

He is possessed, he is obsessive–and none of his lawyers, staffers, friends or family cannot stop his use of his chosen drug. I think sometime in the future all of the tweets are compiled, catalogued and analyzed for history, Trump’s Tweets will be a frightening exploration into the mind of a man unhinged.

Trump’s divisive tweeting and the resulting chaos shows exactly how dangerous an unfiltered president be. Over the last week it has become more and more obvious that Trump’s tweeting is a threat to global stability. In my opinion, Trump must be stopped or he must be removed from office. There is no in between.

  1. Regarding the source material for this post. I noted at the top of the page thanks to Buzz Feed for information. Most of the story is based on Trump’s recent Tweets and I used those tweets as a basis for forming my commentary. It is mostly an opinion piece based on published facts. When I use source material I make an effort to acknowledge all those hard working reporters who did the original investigative work.
Generally speaking, I use headlines and news stories to highlight MY VIEW of the world. Despite my best efforts, I know my analysis and opinions are anti-Trump, but I can’t imagine any reasonable person having any other view. LOL. Thank you for your comments. Darlene

  2. Does it continue to run off the page if you shrink to fit? Just curious, no one else has said that. I will follow up thanks.Darlene
