After Trump, Can Love Break Through?

The 1/6 insurrection aftermath is heating up

OPINION: After Trump, Can Love Break Through?

Editor: One year ago thousands of Trump supporters assaulted the U.S. Capitol. January 6, 2021 was one of the most horrific events in U.S. history. There is increasing evidence of behind the scenes maneuvering by Trump and his inner circle to thwart the law and overturn the 2020 election. The work of the 1/6 Select Committee is plowing forward, closing in on the instigators of the insurrection. Donald Trump’s role in the plot to end democracy in the United States is becoming more clear as emails and texts are made public. In the light of the current division in the country Anna Hessel believes it is time to be honest with ourselves, face the truth of what happened on 1/6/2021, bring the culprits to justice, and then move toward healing.

The Crush Of Charlottesville

Back in 2017, I took one of the DNA tests that are so very popular.  Since I was adopted as an infant, my curiosity about my heritage peaked with regularity – I was giddy with surprise to learn that I am multi-racial.  Thrilled that the Lord has chosen to bless me with an interesting rainbow of cultures in a world where racial tensions dolorously abound.  On August 12, I looked on in horror at a group who call themselves ‘nationalists,’ terrorize Charlottesville, VA. One of them drove through a crowd in his Dodge Challenger, injuring 19 individuals and killing Heather Heyer.  Heather was a beautiful young woman, who was a local paralegal.  Little did I know, at the time, this was a foreshadowing of worse things to come.  This hideous act prompted then-former Vice-President  Joe Biden to run for president in 2020. In my opinion, his election is the only good that has come out of this.

Worse Is Yet To Come

On January 6, 2021, a similar, yet even more heinous act of violence occurred at our nation’s Capitol Building.  I find only small comfort in the fact that James Alex Fields, the man responsible for the horrific Charlottesville attack, was sentenced in 2019 to life plus 419 years. The sentence though appropriate does not bring back Heather Heyer.  Nor does it heal the scars, both physical and emotional,  of those who were injured, or who witnessed her murder. This callous disregard for life, an act of cowardice and pure evil, a precursor to the insurrectionists actions one year ago.

On that January 6th, our very democracy was attacked, along with the Capitol Building. Former advisor to Donald Trump, New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik, is now cooperating with the House Select Committee. Through his legal counsel Timothy Parlatore, Kerik has provided a plethora of documentation.  Mike Pence has been quoted as saying, “I’m not going to allow the Democrats or the national media to use one tragic day in January to demean the intentions of 74 million people who stood with us in our cause.”

Pence’s barbaric statement comes from an interview at the “Christian” Broadcasting Network. Sadly, Mr. Pence, your “cause” has always been driven by hate, racism, and violence. Importantly, Mike Pence finally did the right thing on January 6th, declaring President Biden as the rightful election winner.   His recent remarks to CBN, however, show no actual overt objection to the malicious insurrection. Mr. Pence, may I take this opportunity to point out that your office in the Capitol, and yourself, at the time of the attack was one of the targets? There was a gallows on the Capitol steps. Something to consider when remembering the day.

An Attack On Our Democracy

Capitol Police Sergeant Aquilino Gonell was one of the many who tirelessly defended the Capitol Building that “one tragic day in January,” giving Pence and many others a safe escape.  Sergeant Gonell was injured, along with numerous others, during the insurrection. He still suffers in the aftermath. Trump supporters threatened the lives of those employed at the Capitol, including members of Congress, and defaced the building in the process. Capitol attackers and defenders died. At least four officers who fought insurrectionists hand-to-hand have committed suicide this year.

Real Rights

Not only did the confederate battle flag penetrate the capitol building for the first time in history, but millions of dollars in damage was done. Feces defaced the walls, urine stained the floors. Offices were looted. One of the most malevolent acts was the destruction of the memorial to the late Congressman John Lewis. John Lewis was a Godly humanitarian, and vociferous civil rights leader. Lewis, who stridently stood in peace alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and all of those advocating for human rights, is a hero of his time. Fortunately, the display was replaced by January 14th, 2021, despite the depraved efforts of those responsible for its destruction.

Trump Fiddled Around

As a stalwart supporter of the Biden/Harris administration, I disagree with Liz Cheney’s opinion of our President and Vice-President, as well as her political views.  I do, however, agree wholeheartedly with Ms. Cheney’s assessment of Donald Trump and the actions of his lemmings on January 6th.  “The Donald” was in the White House, in a dining room watching the riot on television, just steps from the Oval Office, and a press briefing room.  As Cheney points out, he could have called a news conference. He could have  called off his motley group of supporters, at any time.  But, Trump did nothing to stop the violence.  That failure of action is inexcusable. I believe and agree with Liz’s assessment that Trump must never be allowed anywhere near the White House-or in any other political office, ever again.

He Let It Happen

Trump had dozens of powerful people telling him to put an end to the vicious attack; but he refused to budge. He watched as police officers were beaten and gravely wounded, and he didn’t lift a finger to halt the invasion. Trump must be held criminally liable for his actions. Donald’s daughter Ivanka tried twice to get her father to listen to reason as the horrendous violence raged.  We must never forget January 6th, just like we must never forget 9/11.  Our freedom and the very soul of our nation were attacked these fateful days. The 9/11 attack came from outside. The 1/6 attack came from within.

Real Presidents

On 9/11 President George W. Bush acted out of concern, compassion, wisdom, and peace; quoting “the Lord is my Shepherd.” On the other hand, when Donald Trump was confronted with an attack on the citadel of democracy he did absolutely nothing to call off his followers.  He viewed the vile carnage with no remorse.  No other president in history has ever acted so precipitously as Donald Trump.  He was never my president – I have vowed to never call him by the title. Hillary Clinton was my 2016 choice. Joe Biden is my president.  I watched in tears as President Obama peacefully, and with reverence, turned the reins reluctantly to Donald Trump.

Hypocrisy Reaches New Heights

I knew a Trump administration would be awful. However, never in my wildest dreams, had I  envisioned a brutal attack on our Capitol.  President Biden, who was the clear winner of the 2020 election, chose to pray on that fateful day, yet Trumpsters have the audacity to question Joe Biden’s faith.  Instead they call a man that watched the country he promised to protect and defend, being attacked, and did nothing. Trump has been called by some Evangelical Christians, “God’s chosen one”.  This blasphemy and the violence his supporters incite have made a mockery of religion and our nation.

Love Breaks Through

These total eclipses of the moral code our country was founded on will forever scar our hearts, but the love that brings us together is far more powerful than the hate that tries to rip us apart.  We are a nation that rallied together in unity after the attacks of 9/11. We are a country founded on Godly principles: tolerance, acceptance, love, and the truth, that all (people) are created equal.  The woman I recognize as my mother raised us to be colorblind – her simple faith taught our family to reject animosity. I embrace her belief that hate will cease to flourish when love breaks through. I’m ready for the love to break through.
