OPINION: Trump Sorest Loser Ever
By Trevor K. McNeil
Human Frailty
There is no accounting for human behavior. Particularly in times of trouble. Stress and panic are capable of leading to seemingly irrational behavior on the part of the American electorate. Such as the re-election of Richard Nixon in 1972 despite his actions in Asia. And then there’s the insanity of George W. Bush’s two elections. Why the comfortable re-election in 2004, after stealing the 2000 election from Al Gore? The 2004 victory still makes me shake my head in bewilderment. The stupid idiot (#43) started two wars that we are still fighting nearly two decades later. A shockingly high number of troops in both Iraq and Afghanistan were not even born when the Twin Towers fell. The unpredictable American electorate and their often obvious disconnect from reality is a forever unknown. Which is part of why the Biden-Harris landslide was far from a fore gone conclusion, despite the polls.
Making History
The 2020 US election made history in many different ways. Some of them better than others. For starters there was the highest voter turn-out ever. Both despite and because of the pandemic. Leading to one of the longest vote-counts, lasting nearly a week from kick-off to final whistle. Something closer to what would be expected somewhere like India which has a much larger population base. Kamala Harris has risen higher in American politics than any woman before her, minority or otherwise, now named Vice President-Elect. With Biden declared President-Elect he is the oldest incoming president and one of the few to come from a modest economic background, as well as the first to attend a public university. Even George W. Bush, somehow managed to get into Yale and Ulysses S. Grant attended West Point.
Bad Company
Despite the bluster, on both sides, Trump did manage to make history, although not in the way he would have hoped. Following the Trump election loss, The Great Orange One became only the sixth president in the history of the nation not to secure a second term. The last one being George H.W. Bush in 1993, losing in oil spectacular fashion to the charming Democrat from Arkansas, Bill Clinton. He is also the third to be impeached by the United States congress. Nixon does count because he resigned before his day in court, leaving his official legacy relatively clean.
Hail Trump
Trump is also the first US President ever to even imply that he might not leave office if he were to lose the election. The Biden landslide notwithstanding. A final proof, if any more proof were needed, of his authoritarian tendencies. No doubt taking a page from King Baby Kim Jong-un and the Strong Like Bear Vladimir Putin. Both of whom Trump counts among his bosom buddies. The last leader to pull such a stunt was former Zimbabwean President, warlord and all around bad egg Robert Mugabe. The then 93-year-old Mugabe pouting like a petulant toddler until he was literally dragged form office by members of the armed forces. Hopefully no such scene materializes at the White House this January 20th.
Sit In His Room And Pout
In typically immature fashion, Trump’s reaction to the Biden landslide was a temper tantrum of apocalyptic proportions. Literally possible, given the firing of the Secretary of Defense and Trump’s dogged refusal to share any intel information with the incoming Biden team. Trump has set up roadblocks to prevent the Biden team from getting vital data on COVID-19 including vaccine distribution plans. Furthermore the Trump administration is withholding significant sums of tax payer money owed to Biden. The money is specifically designed to cover the transition costs of the incoming administration. Trump is desperate to hold on to power. In his delusionary state he has convinced himself he is the winner of the 2020 election. Trump is a strong believer in the principle of “I reject your reality and substitute my own.”
