Courage

D. S. Mitchell

As part of my job at Calamity Politics I get to do research. Research can be lots of fun. This week, I decided to look up courage. I am beginning to believe that we are going to need strength and courage to see this political battle to it’s satisfactory progressive conclusion.

People say some pretty inspiring things.  Here’s a brief collection of some pretty smart comments by some pretty smart people.

1,) “Courage leads starward, fear toward death,” Seneca

2.)”Courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen,” Winston Churchill

3.)”Courage conquers all things,”  Ovid

4.) “The strongest, most generous and proudest of all virtues is courage,” Michel De Montaigne

5.) “Fate loves the fearless,” James Russell Lowell

6.) “Creativity requires the courage to let go of certainties,” Erich Fromm

I’m inspired. How about you? If you are even a little inspired, do something to fight the corrupt Trump administration. Be brave. Be courageous. Write a letter to the local newspaper, make a phone call to your congressperson, march in that NO KINGS protest on July 4th, 2026, donate to Democratic candidates, talk to your friends and neighbors-even those who have been on the other side of the aisle; reconnect if you can. Don’t force the issue but let them talk about their current thoughts on Trump; a lot of folks are evolving as Donnie Boy destroys the economy and every friendly relationship this country has ever had.

Trump’s Third Visit to Walter Reed This Year

Trump’s Third Visit to Walter Reed This Year

D. S. Mitchell

Experience

I was,  in my other life, a Registered Nurse. Over my 38 year career I spent 20 years in Crisis Psychiatry.  The symptoms of mental disorder I see in Trump are quite concerning. Quite flatly, Donald Trump is mentally ill. My observations are not political, but clinical. As a professional I see symptoms every day that Mr. Trump is deeply disturbed, both mentally and emotionally. I know, I am not alone in this belief.  There has long been a consensus among mental health professionals that President Trump is clearly mentally ill with severe symptoms of dementia. Trump’s not the only prez I’ve disliked for their policies.  But, never once, have I doubted a president’s mental capacity. No, not even old Joe Biden. Joe might have been slowing down, but he wasn’t erratic and downright crazy. And quite honestly, Trump has been caught more often than “Sleepy Joe”, taking a little nap, on the government dime.

Grave Danger

If  President Trump is as sick as I believe he is, his continued occupation of the White House is a minute by minute threat to our survival as a country.  His mental illness is a grave danger to the country we love. Caligula, Hitler, Stalin, come to mind. I am sure you would be peeing your pants if one of these mentally ill men had access to our country’s nuclear weapons.  Hell, yeah, you would be terrified. But, it goes beyond the nuclear codes. This guy wants to fight with everyone. Now bored with the Iran War and all the complaining he has decided to return his focus on Cuba. Continue reading

A High Mass for Massie

A High Mass For Massie

A High Mass For Massie

By John Curran

I am not a priest, but if I was I would throw down on a righteous high mass for Thomas Massie. A good man in my opinion, fighting the good fight and he’s really in the trenches today. He must prevail. He is arrayed against the galloping goddamn forces of the modern day Apocalypse in the form of the Godless motherfucker currently some see as president. Good ‘ol USA, great in a lot of ways, not so great in some others, historically speaking. Many bumps in this road if we be truthful about it all but at least, at the very least, we were evolving. Up until this guy.

I don’t mention his name if I can help it but we sure do know it when we see it, smell it, taste it, feel it. Its become like an overpowering thing, like walking onto a field of battle after the last gunshot, on a hot day; before the work details have managed to bury the bodies…the smell kinda knocks ya out, gotta give it pause for a second cause its like nothing you have ever experienced and right off you damn sure know you don’t want to have to experience this again. It’s sorta like why the hell hasn’t this horror been speedily taken care of?  Hell no; it’s been allowed to fester and to grow stronger in its vile poisonous way everyday now while this person jiggles and manipulates every aspect of a system that lo and behold does allow itself to be manipulated and jiggled to allow maximum manipulation and consequent corruption, seeing as how the person is someone of that character, always has been, always will be.

Fact is though, many are now waking up to what is really going on with all of this to the point that even die hard bricks in the road are finding that road shift pretty mightily right under their feet as if a great and most powerful quaking and ‘a shaking of the very earth is occurring such that there no longer really is any room for denial, that building is coming down, better hope it ain’t coming right on top of your head. So, I just hope that during Massie’s last seven months in office he goes after that smelly piece of garbage in the White House with everything he’s got. It’s very important to me, and the country.

OPINION:

Trump Derangement Syndrome

Editor: This article written by me is dated 5/14/2017.  Nearly 9 years ago…hard to believe I am still fighting this lawless SOB. Recently, while watching some nameless TV political show one of the Trump sycophants used the “Trump Derangement Syndrome” term.  I hadn’t heard the phrase in a while and thought it was worth my time to pull this article out of the archives and replay it. So, if you’ve forgotten what TDS is -just keep reading.

D. S. Mitchell

The first place I ever saw the term ‘Trump Derangement Syndrome’ was in a December 2016 LA Times Op Ed, written by Justin Raimondo, the editorial director of Antiwar.com. Justin Raimondo, a Republican, is a self described “conservative-paleo-libertarian” whatever that is supposed to mean. Wikipedia calls it a philosophy that is “in opposition to social progressivism”. I give you this little tidbit to allow you to fairly and appropriately weigh his comments.

In his Op Ed, Raimondo states the Trump Derangement Syndrome disorder develops in stages. I will briefly outline those stages of development as Raimondo describes them:

In the early stages of Raimondo’s described ‘disease,’ the victims “lose all sense of proportion.” In Trump’s case, “every tweet arouses a firestorm” of reaction.

At mid-level stages, Raimondo believes that the victims begin to lose control of their vocabulary. In fact, according to Raimondo’s description, “sufferers speak a distinctive language, consisting solely of hyperbole”. To quote, he says, “the liberals will over react to anything that Trump may do, evidence of the progression of the disease”.

He cites Trump’s decision to keep his own security staff, headed by Keith Schiller, a 16 year Trump employee, after he moves to the White House. Raimondo references the liberal uproar at hearing of that decision. Many calling the action, the security team a “brownshirt,” security force, an obvious reference, to Hitler’s personal security guard.

Such “illogical leaps” of thinking are a “pathway to the next stage of Trump Derangement Syndrome,” Raimondo claims, “a state of constant hysteria”.

Raimondo theorizes that as TDS progresses, the victim loses ability “to distinguish fantasy from reality,” opinions “unmoored from facts”.

Finally, in the advanced stages of the disease the victim “will lose touch with reality,” where life “resembles a dark fairy tale in which the villain (Trump) is an amalgam of all the worst tyrants in history”, while Trump’s critics become the heroes, “akin to the Resistance fighters of World War II.”

In the final stages of the Trump Derangement Syndrome epidemic “violence against a democratically elected leader,” will result, “unless a cure for TDS is found, this is where we are headed”.

The only reason I have brought this up today is I have, since reading this article six months ago, heard the term kicked around recently by Hannity (FoxNews), Adam Gopnik (New Yorker), Fareed Zakaria (Washington Post & CNN) and David Goldman (Spengle/PJ Media).

The theory is that the hatred of President Trump becomes so intense that it impairs an individual’s judgement, where nothing Trump says or does can illicit anything but a negative response.

My theory in contrast, is that the usually semi-somnolent  American public, has been so shocked, and their personal beliefs so unpleasantly jolted by Trump’s narcissistic and virulent attacks on our institutions, by his comments, his tweets and actions, he has awakened a sleeping giant.

Pundits can point to the Internet, social media, the 24 hour news cycle, political bloggers, the “psychological torment” of the Trump presidential win, as the cause of Trump Derangement Syndrome, but I believe the reason for the stiff push back reaction is that Trump’s thinking and morality is in direct opposition to mainstream America. We on the liberal left detest this man because he is, detestable.

I don’t need to be told by right wing crack pots, in this case Justin Raimondo and Sean Hannity, that I am afflicted with a psychological disease. Screw them. What does bother me, is that some of the main stream media are actually picking up on this bullshit, and passing it on to their audience.

This TDS was dreamed up by the right, to make fun of those of us who loudly disagree with Trump. I don’t like the idea that I’m being mocked by these right wingers, accused of having a mental disorder because I am resisting the policies of this out of control kleptocrat, currently occupying the White House.

I refuse to be made out as a psychopath because of Trump’s extreme unpopularity. The reason for Trump’s unpopularity is based on Trump’s behavior and his policies, not on some “sickness” of mine, or 60% of the American public. If I am wrong because I have a mental disorder, then approximately 60% of the country has been afflicted.

Jonathan Tobin in a February 2017 article for The National Review (conservative blog) stated, “the extremism and paranoia of the anti-Trump camp is matching, or exceeding the bad judgement being exhibited by the White House.”

I am neither paranoid, nor extreme.

As each day passes and the White House fills the airways with lies, and Trump pounds out Executive Order after Executive Order, assaulting the environment, and the foundation of our government, I become more and more convinced that it will be people like myself, ordinary citizens, that will eventually stop this madman.

So, if you are enraged by the policies of Trump; speak up, push back, and refuse to accept their lies as truth. There is no such thing as Trump Derangement Syndrome, it is just a device to mock and joke about one of the most dangerous individuals I have ever seen assume office in this country.

I believe it will be the voices of citizens crying out for law and justice that save this democracy. If you are against Trump, you are on the right side. Don’t let some conservative jackass sway your conviction. Trump is on the wrong side of history, and it is our duty to stop him. That’s called democracy.

The ICE Hasn’t Melted & More Freeze is Coming

By Cate Rees-Hessel with Wes Hessel

ICE Arrests Continue

Brutal ICE arrests are on going. Violent incidents are increasing as we end a grim and troubled holiday season. The horrific murder of the beautiful and kind hearted Renee Nicole Good has brought widespread public outrage, but an arrest for gunning down this American citizen in cold blood has yet to be made. She leaves behind 3 precious children and a loving spouse. Her wife Becca Good is broken hearted, saying in her statement about the tragedy, “And while any place we were together was home, there was a strong shared sense here in Minneapolis that we were looking out for each other. Here, I had finally found peace and safe harbor. That has been taken from me forever.”

Fucking Bitch

Renee was not a threat to anyone – her final words were “That’s fine, dude. I’m not mad at you.” The words of the ICE agent that shot and killed her were full of hatred, “Fucking bitch.” Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey spoke eloquently with strong words against this tragic act of pure evil.

Alex Pretti, RN

The morning of 1/24/2026, two weeks after the murder of Renee Good, Registered Nurse, Alex Pretti, a white guy, an American citizen, was shot an estimated 8 times, or perhaps as many as 10 times, by a Border Patrol agent while Pretti was being held down by at least half a dozen other officers. Before the last bullet had left the chamber of the agent’s gun, the Trump administration came out full force labeling Alex Pretti a gun wielding psycho, a “domestic terrorist,” a madman running toward federal law enforcement agents attempting to kill them. The attack on the character of Good and Pretti is shameful. The character assassination of Pretti and Good by Noem, Bondi, Bovino, Vance and Trump makes it clear there’s no truth coming from our federal government. In fact, state authorities in MN are so distrustful of the federal government the DHS was ordered by a Minnesota court to preserve all forensic evidence from the cases.

Filming the Interaction

From videos and affidavits from witnesses on the scene; Pretti was filming the interaction of agents with protesters. In one video he was clearly shown trying to help a woman get up from the pavement after being knocked down by the feds. At no time did Pretti  draw or attempt to draw his legally licensed and permitted weapon. Alex was a caring man, he was an ICU nurse at the VA Medical Center. He wanted to help people not harm them; that’s why the citizens of Minneapolis, MN are protesting the presence of ICE on their streets.

Worthy of 1984 Double Speak

The character assassination of Pretti and Good by Noem, Bondi, Bovino, Vance and Trump makes it clear there’s no truth coming from this crowd and we need to be clear on that. In fact, so distrustful of the federal government the DHS was ordered by a Minnesota court to preserve all forensic evidence from the cases.

Reign of Terror

America, we are better than this. The “ICE reign of terror”, as U.S. Representative and senatorial candidate from the Chicago area Raja Krishnamoorthi succinctly put it, this “must end.” Her former sister-in-law Morgan Fletcher said, “she never expected a loved one’s death to be ‘so high profile’ or a ‘massively divisive, political topic.’” This lovely human being sure does not sound like a “domestic terrorist” to the millions mourning her death, myself and my spouse included. Slander is speaking ill of the dead and Ms. Good’s children don’t deserve to hear awful lies about the mommy they mourn.

No ‘Absolute Immunity”

Our eyeliner wearing “Vice President JD Vance claimed agent Jonathan Ross, who fatally shot Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis, had “absolute immunity” because he was engaged in a federal law enforcement action. Although federal officials have some constitutional shields against state prosecution, the immunity isn’t absolute.” Legal experts, including the University of Wisconsin Law School, conclude that Vance is wrong. There is no “absolute immunity.”

Stars Wear ‘Be Good’ Pins

At the 2026 Golden Globe awards in support of Renee and her family, prominent attenders such as Mark Ruffalo, Wanda Sykes, Natasha Lyonne, Jean Smart, Tessa Thompson, Bella Ramsey, and Ariana Grande, wore “BE GOOD” pins. Such buttons are available from multiple sources online. Rest in peace Renee. Rest in peace Alex. We will fight for your memory – your lives stood for Good and no gaslighting from the Nazi’s in the White House can change that.

More atrocities of ICE:

  1. In North Aurora, IL, a woman was pepper sprayed in the face by an ICE agent while standing still with her arms at her sides.
  2. ICE agents, per tribal leaders, detained four Native Americans, with only one being released a short time after.
  3. Chicago area U.S. Representative Delia Ramirez is calling for ICE to be defunded – her comment that funding ICE only fuels our own destruction is spot on…
  4. A U.S. appeals court has lifted the restrictions on ICE using force on protesters in Minnesota – this sickens and scares me.
  5. A recent CNN poll shows 3/4 of the respondents agree ICE used excessive force and killing Renee Good was unjustified.
  6. Mark Ruffalo, while wearing a “Be Good” button, spoke against Trump in a heartfelt red carpet interview.
  7. Lehigh County is cooperating with ICE to the fullest extent of the law, sad to report this.
  8. Anti-ICE activist Mark Pinsley is seeking to run for office in Lehigh County.
  9. There is an unpaid rent allegation against ICE for a facility(s) being used by them in Pennsylvania
  10. Homeland Security via email has confirmed there is a “Catch of the Day” in Maine after over 50 arrests were made.
  11. Tom Homan claims the ICE agent that killed Renee Good is fearing for his life and that of his family. Renee Good feared for her life before she was killed by him.
  12. A photo on social media shows an elderly man in boxers and a robe being taken by an ICE agent. His door was broken down and a gun put to the head of his daughter-in-law. His name is Saly, a naturalized US citizen. He was driven around and frightened by ICE, then dropped back at his residence as if this was normal.
  13. Democrats now control Virginia and have moved to stop cooperating with Trump’s ICE.
  14. Renee Good’s mother spoke of her daughter’s kindness and fear in her final moments of life.
  15. A doctor who wanted to try to save Renee Goods life was stopped by an ICE agent that said he didn’t care. Help was kept at bay with the use of weapons while a shocked and angry crowd watched in fear and horror.

D. S. Mitchell

I didn’t sleep well last night. I was agitated, angry, and broken hearted over what appears to be a murder in Minneapolis, MN, by a masked ICE agent. ICE stands for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the woman, a white woman, a 37 year old mother of three, was an American citizen, Renee Nicole Good.  The gaslighting by DHS Secretary, Kristi Noem  and the Mango Menace himself began  immediately. Rather than wait for an investigation the woman is being labeled “a domestic terrorist”. I tried to put myself in Renee Good’s place, being menaced by a masked man attempting to drag me out of my car. Holy crap, I’ve seen a lot in my long life but I don’t know if I could have behaved any less fearful than Renee did. This bullshit has gone way too far. I don’t know how many people have to hit the streets to sway the direction of this government, but I’ve heard that about 12 million protesters on the streets at one time can overwhelm the bad politics of this MAGA mad man and force a change in policy.

This isn’t El Salvador, yet; or maybe, people like Trump and Stephen Miller think it already is. Well, I’m not willing to surrender to thugs and criminals. I’m asking a mere 12 million protesters take to the streets. No Kings and Indivisible will be planning events coming into the spring. Watch for them and participate. We need an overwhelming outpouring of dissatisfaction against this mob boss president.  Just 12 million citizens yelling and waving signs can change the direction of this country.

All I keep thinking of are the words of that iconic protest song from the 1960’s, “For What It’s Worth“, by Stephen Stills.  I included a verse to stir your memory banks. Pull it up on YouTube. Buffalo Springfield.

Verse 1

There’s something happening here

But what it is ain’t exactly clear

There’s a man with a gun over there

A-telling me I got to beware

Chorus

Hey its time we stop

Hey what’s that sound

Everybody look what’s goin down

Waggy is Adorable

Have you seen the ads for the new toy that looks and acts “just like a real puppy”? Waggy is a curly haired AI puppy who tilts its adorable head just like a real dog. Waggy responds to your child’s voice just like a real dog. Sit! It sits. Come! It comes. It cuddles with your child just like a real dog. But it’s not real and according to the ad that’s the selling point. No expensive vet bills, no food to purchase, no long dog walks. No bothersome biological needs whatsoever. No care required.

No Empathy Required

What does such a realistic-seeming virtual puppy teach your child? It teaches them the puppy has no needs, no desires, no life of its own. It exists only to serve the needs and desires of your child.  The only thing that matters is the child, what he feels, what he needs, what he wants. No care or empathy required.

Biological Reality

Waggy weans your child away from biological reality. When biology is canceled, the opportunity to develop empathy for another living being is canceled.  We place our child in a subtle training ground for three things: 1) dissociation from the body 2) the atrophy 0f empathy 3) the development of narcissism. The interaction between the child and the AI dog is narcissistic. It is devoid of any feeling or even thought of the needs of another. Interaction with a virtual being is preferable to interaction with a real being.

Conditioning

Is this what you want for your child? Is your convenience as a parent worth this programming of your child? Is this the conditioning you want for the next generation?

Toys Matter

Am I being hyperbolic? overstating the situation? I think not. Not when viewed in the context of three things: rapidly progressing AI, the transhumanist agenda and fascism. (Now she’s really getting hyperbolic!) Bear with me… There are plenty of dots to connect between these three things that could easily fill a whole book, but in the scope of this article I can only point briefly to them. Hopefully this will indicate how subtle and insidious the Waggy programming is, why a little toy like this matters.

Ditch Empathy

Elon Musk has stated “The fundamental weakness of Western civilization is empathy.” Remember him prancing about on the stage with his chainsaw? He wielded the perfect tool to represent the lack of empathy it took to slash through people’s livelihoods in his DOGE purge. Musk justifies such actions as protecting us from “civilizational suicidal empathy.” Should we prefer homicidal empathy?

Peter Thiel

In alignment with Musk, his former PayPal co-founder and kingpin of transhumanism, Peter Thiel, rejects “abstract universalism that treats all individuals as fundamentally equal.” Ditch equality, ditch democracy. Enter fascism. This brings us to the new catch phrase of the Christian Nationalist agenda…

“Toxic Empathy”

Christian author Allie Beth Stuckey, titled her book with this now popular term she coined, Toxic Empathy. In a video interview she tells us how much she likes Steven Miller and his deportations. When the interviewer pushes back about sending deportees to El Salvador (and it’s notoriously brutal CECOT prison) she deflects: (the liberals are) highlighting these stories of supposed cruelty from ICE” and admonishes people to ask “but is this true?” True? Has she seen any of the numerous videos documenting the blatant cruelty?  or does she only watch Fox News which deceives largely through omission? (emphasis added) https://www.tiktok.com/@nytopinion/video/7529126187717692703

Transhumanism

Transhumanism, at best, aims to cybor biology, at worst, to eradicate it all together in favor of uploading one’s consciousness into a computer. Either way, AI Waggy aligns and enables this.

Is that what we want for our children? or will we let ourselves see the connections between the dots?

Do we see how subtle conditioning via a cute AI toy disassociates us from biological reality? How it desensitizes us to the living needs of others? How it eradicates empathy? How it paves the way to dehumanizing others? Hitler had the Jews. We have the immigrants.

Waggy, Inside

If that’s what we want for our children, our country and the future of humanity, by all means bring (supposedly) harmless Waggy into the house. Let virtual interaction groom our children for the non-empathic narcissism and de-humanization that fascism requires. Waggy, in his adorable little robot way, helps us get there.

Time For The 25th Amendment

Back Then

In my younger years, way back in college, my first year, for a term or two, I was a Psychology/Sociology major. I’ve always been interested in what makes people behave the way they do. I later switched to nursing and it was a lot of the same, trying to figure out what made people tick.  As an RN I worked 1NW OHSU Crisis Psychiatry Unit, Portland, OR,  for many years before retraining for Cardiac ICU about 20 years into my 45 year long nursing career. I ‘ve left that life behind, and I am now retired from nursing and currently writing and editing full time. So, as a writer I’m still interested in what makes people behave the way they do.

36%

Right now Trump has a 37% approval rating in the national polls. I get that 1% of that 37% are billionaires, and are happy as hell, but what about the remaining 36%? Do these Trump supporters really feel good about 15 million people losing health care, hundreds of hospitals and clinics closing across the country, health care premiums going through the roof, the end of science in this country, the end of cancer research, DOGE plowing through all our private information, the destruction of “due process,” the rise of the oligarchs, the federal government shut down, or the firing of 100’s of 1,000’s of government workers?

Be Happy…Until

Well, all I can say to the Trumper crowd, is, be happy….until it’s your grandma’s nursing home closes and she has nowhere to go except home with a family member, or till your dad’s social security check is held up because DOGE decided he was really dead, or my God, your daughter’s new husband who spent a weekend in the sun doing yard work and was now suspiciously dark, and aroused the interest of prowling ICE agents, who arrested him, and sent him someplace-they can’t remember, or refuse to tell the judge.
