Trump put on a disgusting show last night at the CNN Town Hall

Trump Stuck in the Mud

A Real Train Wreck

Anyone that knows me knows my total disgust of anything and everything, Trump. So, some may wonder why I would waste an hour watching the CNN Donald Trump Town Hall last night.  Frankly, I just wanted to confirm that all the character traits that originally made me loath the man were still applicable. I didn’t need the hour to confirm my original assessment, but I hung around, just because as with all train wrecks it’s hard to look away.

Friendly Audience

He had a handpicked pro-Trump audience in New Hampshire. The crowd laughed and cheered at his attacks on E. Jean Carroll who had just the day before, won a $5 million lawsuit against the ex-president for sexual assault and defamation. Hopefully, Ms. Carroll isn’t done yet because this guy hasn’t learned anything about defamation. I believe she has grounds for a second defamation case against the disgraced, twice impeached, pro-sexual assault, ex- president.

A Vivid Reminder

If nothing else, last night gave us a vivid reminder of what another term of a Donald Trump presidency would look like. I don’t know about anyone else but I’m way, way, past the chaos, shame, hatred, cruelty, lies, corruption, and total dysfunction this man brought to the White House. I’m ready to see this aberration gone into the dark night, never to be seen or heard from again.

Kaitlan Collins

CNN’s moderator, Kaitlan Collins, was persistent in trying to cut Trump off or correct him when he told bald faced lies about the results of the 2020 election, the January 6th riot, the insurrectionists, and E. Jean Carroll, but for the most part he was given an unfiltered prime-time platform to spread the same old filth. At one point Trump scowled at Ms. Collins and said, “You’re a nasty person,” echoing the 2016 line he had used against Hillary Clinton.

He Can’t Stop Himself

Trump won’t stop telling the Big Lie about the 2020 presidential election or the January 6th riot. The demented, delusional, bloated, ex-president probably can’t stop spreading the falsehood that the 2020 election was “rigged,” and “stolen” due to his fragile mental state. Is it dementia? Insanity? Whatever it is; Trump’s got a bad case of it. It wasn’t a Town Hall where a presidential candidate talked about what he was going to do for the country but rather an hour spent attacking his enemies and defending his undefendable behavior.

Doling Out the Pardons

At one point Trump stated he was “inclined” to pardon “many” of the January 6th rioters who had attempted to stop the certification of Joe Biden’s Electoral College win. The audience clapped and cheered. When it came to the Proud Boys and the Oath Keepers, he was a bit more hesitant. I believe that was just for now, if he gets elected, I believe he will blanket pardon all of them. I’m sure his inner circle was glad that he didn’t make that promise so early in the race.

Pence Gets No Apology

When Trump was asked by the moderator if he owed Mike Pence an apology for having put his VP’s life in danger with the incendiary tweets he was sending to his supporters during the violent and deadly attack on the Capitol. He refused saying, “Mike did the wrong thing.” In fact, the demented (?) old fart called it a “beautiful day,” embracing the lawless violence of January 6th. No matter how vulgar, profane or politically incorrect Trump was, the friendly crowd in New Hampshire ate up the bullshit rewarding him with applause, laughter, and hoots of appreciation.

“A Wack Job”

Despite being held liable for sexual abuse and defamation by a NY jury, to the tune of $5 million in damages, Trump mocked E. Jean Carroll’s accusations of rape as “made up hanky-panky in a dressing room.” The audience laughed and applauded. Quite honestly, the disrespect for the victim was disgusting. And, I might add, it was a huge slap in the face to every woman in America who has been the victim of sexual assault or rape.

Set Up

I’m sure Trump wanted the “Town Hall” to make it look like he was the Republican nominee. He was repeatedly called “Mr. President.” Whoever planned the event wanted him to look like the clear and unchallenged incumbent.

Hailing The Roe vs Wade Decision

He hailed the overturning of Roe v. Wade as a “great victory.” At one point he said he “was honored to have done what I did.”  Trump, more than anyone on the planet, is responsible for the Supreme Court decision to overturn 50 years of precedent; threatening a woman’s right to a legal abortion in this country. Trump appointed three of the right-wing justices who pushed the majority opinion. When questioned Trump invented a couple new dance steps as he aggressively dodged taking a position on a federal abortion ban.

Behind The Scenes

I’ve read that privately he has blamed abortion politics for the underperformance of Republican candidates in the 2022 midterms. So far in the campaign he has been treading carefully on that hot topic. While refusing to say if he would sign a federal ban, Mr. Trump painted Democrats as radicals and promised (for whatever that’s worth) that he supported exemptions for rape, incest, and the life of the mother. “What I’ll do is negotiate so people are happy,” he said.

Heated Defense

I wonder if Jack Smith and his crew of DOJ investigators tuned in to watch the show.  In my opinion, Trump made several statements that could potentially deepen his legal jeopardy in the mishandling of documents case. But then I’m no lawyer, just a retired RN who took a shit load of pre-law classes before I changed my major. Trump became noticeably angry when Kaitlin Collins brought up the special counsel investigation into his removal of presidential records, including 300 individual classified documents, from the White House, taking them to Florida and stashing them in the basement of Mar-a-Lago.

Babble

“I was there, and I took what I took, and it gets declassified,” said Trump. Maintaining that he had a standing order to automatically declassify documents that went to the president’s residence, despite pushback on those assertions from his own former officials. He continued, claiming, “I had every right to do it, I didn’t make a secret of it. You know, the boxes were stationed outside the White House, people were taking pictures of it.”

Did He Share Classified Documents?

Collins pressed the issue and inquired if he had shown the documents to anyone. Trump did not rule out whether he had showed classified material to visitors to the club, individuals without security clearance. He hedged, saying, “Not really, I can’t think of anyone.” (But) I would have the right to.” At another point he declared, “I have the right to do whatever I want with them.” My, my. Apparently, among other things Mr. Trump is unaware of the Presidential Records Act. No records leave the White House, all documents are the property of the people of the United States of America.

Biden Tweets His Question

It looks like Biden intends to focus his 2024 campaign on Mr. Chaos. Shortly after the event ended, President Biden sent out a tweet. “Do you want four more years of that?” it read. “Hell no,” I bellowed. Of course, there was the obligatory request for donations followed. It seems that the president’s political team was watching the on-air disaster.

My Thinking on The CNN Trump Rally

The only reason I can imagine that CNN would let such a debacle take place was because they are hoping to lure FOX (News?) viewers that are pissed at FOX for firing Tucker Carlson. It looks like the new ownership at CNN wants to shift their on-air political leanings toward the conservative right. It’s all about the money, and who has it, and what they are willing to spend it on; and in this case, it looks like someone at CNN wants to support and promote a disgraced, twice impeached grifter for a second try at destroying our democracy.
