Chasing the Spider was my first full length novel. Mostly thanks to time on my hands with the COVID-19 quarantine. I was excited to tell Sky’s story and the story of the men in her life. It soon became obvious that the story would take more than one book and quickly morphed into a three book series.
I had fun writing the Spider Series with all its provocative romance, thrilling suspense, and sensual, heart throbbing adventure. Books: (1) Chasing the Spider, (2) Stalking the Spider, and (3) Embracing the Spider. I promise you that each of the novels has an equal amount of romance, intrigue, head-spinning, and heart-twisting action. Someone I know called the series dark romance. That’s right, 12 years plus. The book is filled with lot’s of manly adventure, meaning lots of violence and mayhem. These guys are too busy for sex but lots of time for other mischief.

A Labor of Love, and Dedication…
The theme for this year’s Black History Month celebration speaks volumes. “African Americans and Labor” reminds us that Black men and women were kidnapped from their distant homeland and brought to the American colonies as slaves; slaves whose children and grandchildren would suffer the same fate, locked into lives of misery because of their skin color for the next 150 years. From that first load of human cargo in 1619, Black history has become our nation’s history. The Black contribution to the building of the United States has been great, but for the most part has gone unrecognized and uncompensated. As Black History Month begins let’s take a few minutes to acknowledge just a few of those contributors and their incredible contributions to our country.
United They Stand
African Americans have championed worker’s rights, right along with civil rights, for a significant part of U.S. history. In 1925, A. Philip Randolph, a civil rights activist and labor organizer founded the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters and Maids, the first Black union to be recognized by the AF of L. Improvements for the American worker has been an integral part of the civil rights movement, and people of color continue to be leaders on this issue. Of course, these aren’t the only areas where African Americans stand out.
I had several advantages going for me when I called writer, author, editor, publisher, D. S. Mitchell to ask her for an interview. The first big advantage is that I have known Darlene Mitchell for nearly forty years, the second was I wanted to do a story about her. I hoped our long term friendship and my appeal to her vanity would seal the deal. So after a few hiccups we got together at her home in beautiful southern Oregon and I started asking questions. Here is the result of that interview.
David: When we first met you were an RN. How and when did you decide you wanted to abandon the bedpan for the ink pen?
Darlene: You’re funny. It wasn’t like that. I’ve been writing short stories and bad poetry since I was a young kid. I spent my school years in advanced creative writing classes, encouraged and mentored by a number of wonderful teachers along the way. But, so few writers find success that I chose a “reliable” career. Professional nursing was a sure paycheck, not a hope and a prayer. My mother said a hail Mary on that choice, thankful that the four years of college she paid for wouldn’t be wasted on a low paying unpredictable career as a writer.
