ALTER-NARRATIVES

BAD Company

Backstory

If you want to know what someone is going to do tomorrow, look at what they did yesterday. Same with corporations, which are really just collections of people. Don’t stop there;  the same goes for nations. Although the term nation no longer applies, the state of Texas thinks it is a nation independent of the federal government.

Once a Nation

Texas was for a time an independent republic after it gained independence from Mexico in 1839. Immediately Texas began clamoring to join the United States. On 12/29/1845 Texas gave up its independent republic status and became the 28th state of the United States of America. Sadly, on 03/02/1861 Texas after 15 years in the union decided it would join in armed rebellion against the United States of America.  As part of the Confederacy, Texas attempted to secede from the union for the purpose of perpetuating slavery within its borders.

Smokin’ Loco Weed?

To this day, Texans boast that they were once an independent nation and they damn well can be that again, any damn time they feel like it. Well let me tell you that’s a load of horse puckie. The union victory in the Civil War established the power of the federal government and cemented the fact that the federal government will not be dissolved by wish or revolution. A Supreme Court case from 1868, Texas vs. White, backs this up. In this case the justices decided that when Texas “became one of the United States, she entered into an indissoluble relation.” This decision meant that no individual states is allowed to secede from the union.

To Continue

The court opinion continued, “The union between Texas and the other States was as complete, as perpetual, and as indissoluble as the union between the original States. There was no place for reconsideration, or revocation, except through revolution, or through consent of the States,” according to the decision handed down by the justices. So, without consent from the U.S. or by means of revolution, Texas can’t secede from the union. With that said, folks like Greg Abbott try to perpetuate the myth that Texas is going to secede anytime she gets a bee in her bonnet. Until then, get the hell out of the way because Texas will do whatever she damn well pleases; screw the constitutional rights of women and voters in the state of Texas.

Not Like The Others

No doubt because Texans think they have the right to hypothetically secede from the Union without causing a war they believe they as Texans are more independent than the rest of us. So, taking Texas in the context of ‘the nation’ they were, and many still insist they are, the recent news from the Lone Star State begins to make more sense.

Sad but True

Strange as it might sound, the new laws Texas has wrought do have some precedence. They have allies both domestic and overseas. Dozens of states prodded on by anti-abortion far right Christian activists are ready to activate severe abortion restrictions effectively ending Roe vs Wade. The state of Alabama, for example, attempted something similar, only to have their state abortion laws struck down on constitutional issues. Thanks, in part, to the efforts of the left-wing activist group The Satanic Temple, revealing the blatant self-serving hypocrisy of the state judges involved. Every similar attempt ending in the upholding of Roe V. Wade.

Another Tact

In Texas a frenzied legislature egged on by their lunatic governor plans on activating a citizen army to pursue and sue anyone they “believe” “may have” assisted a woman to obtain an abortion after the six week ban. Under the “vigilante” legislation, private citizens are promised $10,000 bounties to file lawsuits against anyone accused of aiding or abetting a woman seeking an abortion.

In the I’s

On the world stage, Texas can find more allies. Their attitude toward reproductive health, levying legal penalties against actions that go against their hysterical religious-based norm, putting them in near lockstep with the Ayatollah’s of Iraq and Iran. It isn’t just Islamic dictators who agree with the Texas leadership. Two other nations with similar attitudes, without even leaving the I’s are Italy and Ireland. Abortion, although officially legal, but as we all know, laws aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on without proper enforcement.

In Name Only

Technically legal since 1973, Italy’s abortion laws have a very sneaky loophole unknown to most outside the country. Although abortion procedures are legal, the law also leaves it up to individual doctors whether they want to do it or not. No one can be sued for helping a woman get an abortion, unlike Texas, but no doctor can be sued for not performing an abortion. With nearly 70 percent of Italian doctors self-identifying as ‘conscious objectors’ actually procuring a safe, medical abortion is next to impossible.

Backlash

Ireland officially made abortion legal in 2018 in a landslide vote. Not everyone agreed, however, and to this day, there are large numbers of anti-abortion organizations, including representation from modern Republican movements with their roots in the I.R.A. are carrying out frightening action to prevent abortions. Tactics include fake websites for existing pro-choice organizations and abortion services with misleading information, including wrong addresses and misinformation about what the process entails. Some go even further, replacing the addresses of abortion clinics with crisis centers where women are strongly encouraged, under the threat of damnation, not to ‘murder your baby.’

For God’s Sake!

Something all three nations have in common, aside from all starting with I, is that they are functionally, if not officially, theocracies with long histories of literally militant religiosity. Iran becoming The Islamic State of Iran following the Iranian revolution of 1979. Texas, similarly, came up out of the ashes of the Mexican Revolution, Southern Baptist religious rigidity, and the TV driven Evangelical movement. Thank you, TBN. Further more the proud members of militant Catholicism in both Italy and Ireland have long bloody histories of violence against those with different views.

Down To Today

All in some way related to upholding and ‘expanding the faith’ throughout the world. Few thinking twice about breaking the ‘laws of man’ to uphold ‘the laws of God,’ as their superstitious minds see it. Noticing no hypocrisy in petrol-bombing family homes, killing abortion providers, bombing clinics, barbecuing children already born, to ‘defend the faith,’ while condemning rape victims for not wanting to carry their rapist’s baby.

Conclusion

So, Texas needs to either get in line with the rest of America or, do what they clearly want to do and secede, to become a far-right Christian theocracy. Thank Zeus the majority of the 29 million Texans do not want to secede, nor do they want street warfare, nor do they want abortion bans.  Thursday the DOJ will be bringing suit against the state of Texas, because no matter what-the federal government has an obligation to defend the laws of the United States of America  not those of the false Texas Republic.

Thanks, K.M.
