Vice President Kamala Harris: An American Story

By D. S. Mitchell

Preparing For The Challenge

Kamala Harris is a leader. You see it in her demeanor, in her confidence. Her story, her views, and how her education and work have prepared her for the challenges of her job as the first female vice president of the United States should be explored and written about. An attorney,  a fierce prosecutor, California Attorney General, senator, social leader, best selling author, and Vice President of the United States; all by the age of 58.

Early Examples

Harris grew up watching her parents forge ahead into unknown territory, and—by her own admission—her yearning for something meaningful started at a young age. Harris’s mother Gopalan immigrated from Chennai, India, to study at the University of  California-Berkeley for her doctorate in nutrition and endocrinology. She met and fell in love with Donald Harris, a Jamaican-born economics major earning his Ph.D. Rather than returning home to marry someone of her family’s choosing, Gopalan stayed in the United States. Together Harris and Gopalan had two daughters. They raised their daughters immersed in their two combined cultures in a new land and instilled in them respect for activism and academia.

She Makes People Pay Attention

Kamala Harris has star power, she makes those in the room stop and pay attention. She is strikingly beautiful. Her smile lights up a space. Her speeches echo the articulate beauty and wisdom of Michelle Obama.  Now is her time to take full advantage of those qualities.

Campaign 2024

    • Vice President Kamala Harris kicked off a multi-state “Fight for Our Freedoms College Tour”  at Virginia’s Hampton University, Thursday, September 14, 2023 to a huge and enthusiastic crowd.
    • The Biden/Harris administration hopes to mobilize young Americans by highlighting key issues that “disproportionately impact young people,” such as reproductive rights, gun safety, voting rights, LGBTQ+ equality and climate change. The administration hopes Harris can gin up the youth vote. The Democrats need the young to vote for the oldest presidential candidate in history. Joe needs them in 2024. Everyone knows the Republican policies are toxic to most young people. Dems can’t allow this major voting block to skip voting in 2024.
    • To accompany the college tour, the campaign has purchased several large ad blocks on TV to highlight the actions the administration has taken to support younger generations, including funding 14,000 new mental health professionals in schools through the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and investing $39 billion in colleges through the American Rescue Plan to help them continue serving students during the COVID-19 pandemic. And although quagmired in legal set backs and challenges the White House points to their ongoing efforts to eliminate student debt.

Hair On Fire

Joe Biden declared he would be a transitional president. He never said the transition would stop in 2024. The work is not finished. But, he is right, time for new leadership is on the horizon. I truly believe, the hair on fire, back room pant’s pissing, is all about fear of the untried, in other words, the future. Fear of a future where women and men of all colors come together and work for the good of the country, not the good of a privileged few.  When you hear, “Joe’s too old”-what you are really hearing is, “OMG! We could end up with an uppity woman of color sitting at the Resolute desk, in the Oval Office. No, No.”

What Are The Chances?

Of the 46 presidents of the United States, eight have died in office, and at least one, Woodrow Wilson, was totally incapacitated by a massive stroke and unbeknownst to the country, his wife was running the show. So why would anyone keep strumming the “he’s too old tune”? Statistically, no matter who the president is, their age, or gender; there is a near 20% chance he (or the potential she) won’t survive the term. Of my several uncles, two stand out as polar opposites- Norman, chose moderation, 1 drink not several, 1 cookie not 7, and definitely no cigarette smoking. Frank, on the other hand, had a wild streak and drank, smoked, and womanized, to excess.  Norman lived to a wise old 94. Frank on the other hand, burned hot, and passed at 70. My only point here is, most deaths of  U.S. presidents occur due to assassination and have nothing to do with the age or general health of the president.

Lean Into It

The totally discredited media outlets such as Fox and NewsMax have their pundits in front of the cameras every night warning of “Biden’s age, and mental health,” while winking and nodding, confirming not only is Biden old, but Kamala Harris is next in line to the presidency. Holy Moly, the commentators are scaring their audience into thinking that, if such a thing happened, Kamala Harris is not competent to take over for an ailing president. Kamala Harris is one of the most prepared individuals to ever serve as Vice President. Breathe easy, folks, this woman is ready for whatever the future presents.

Melon Head Melt Down

To my knowledge, Joe Biden has never suggested the Continental Army, way back in 1776, took over the airports to keep them out of British hands. This is just one of the absurd things the melon head has said over the last couple years. Folks, the GOP doesn’t think Trump is competent or cognizant, what they know is that they have no one else; they have driven away the sane and competent and now what they are left with is a side show barker, stuck on a lie, that may very well tear this country apart.
