We Share A Dream

Honor MLK today by doing something for someone else. Make today a day of service.

We Share A Dream

By Anna & Wes Hessel

Thank You, Dr. King…

We celebrate the birthday of one of the greatest and most humble human beings to ever live, Dr. Martin Luther King, a Godly man of peace and gentle warrior.  He selflessly championed for civil rights and worked to change the world into a better place.  Many hard won civil rights from that time have been attacked during the Trump administration but now with the inauguration of President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, Dr. King’s legacy will continue to live on.  The Biden-Harris inaugural team has instituted a day of service to honor the remarkable Martin Luther King, Jr.

 The Son of a King

Born the son of a preacher man, Michael King, Jr., entered life in 1929 on January 15th in Atlanta.  His father, Michael, Sr., was himself the scion of a pastor.  Junior joined senior in 1934 on a sojourn through  Rome, Tunisia, Egypt, Jerusalem, and Bethlehem, commissioned by the church the elder King pastored.  The final stop was in Berlin for the Baptist World Alliance’s international conference.

The Fight for Reform

There both Kings saw firsthand the spread of Nazi influence.  The BWA issued an official policy statement, saying, “This Congress deplores and condemns as a violation of the law of God the Heavenly Father, all racial animosity, and every form of oppression or unfair discrimination toward the Jews, toward coloured people, or toward subject races in any part of the world.”  Having visited sites in the German capital which were involved with the Reformation movement started by Martin Luther, Michael Sr. began to call himself, “Martin Luther King, Sr.” and renamed his son accordingly, making it official on junior’s birth certificate in 1957.

Growing Up Black

Junior had befriended a Caucasian boy before they both entered first grade, but because of their skin color difference, they went to separate (segregated) schools.  The white child’s parents a short time later then cut off contact between the two, citing race as the deciding factor.  When the younger Martin Luther went to his parents about the break, they sat him down to detail the slavery of blacks and resultant racism.  When confronted with all that had been perpetrated against people of color, MLK said later he became, “determined to hate every white person”.  His father and mother, though, taught junior that Jesus called for the love of everyone.

45 Reasons “45” Didn’t MAGA

A look at Trump's failures

OPINION:

45 Reasons “45” Didn’t MAGA

By Anna Hessel

  1. America was already great before Trump was elected.
  2. He removed us from the Paris Climate Accord. Despite all the facts – he refers to global warming as a “hoax.”
  3. President Trump insulted our military service members. Insulting the very men and women who put their lives on the line for our nation. He shamefully attacked dead heroes like John McCain and Gold Star families. To top it off, Donnie Bone Spur decided to veto the bipartisan supported National Defense Authorization Act, stopping a 3% military personnel pay raise.
  4. Trump lifted the ban on trophy hunting, because Donnie Jr. wanted him to.  This has allowed the import of lion and elephant carcasses, innocent and majestic animals whose lives were taken away for “sport.”
  5. The Trump administration caged thousands of migrant children. A record number still remain in detention. He has forcibly separated kids from their parents. Over 600 of these children were ripped cruelly from their families, and now those mothers and fathers cannot be located.
  6. Nearly 400,000 people are dead due to Trump’s mishandling of the COVID-19 crisis. He knew the risk of this deadly virus but he lied to the public. The US is the epi-center of the coronavirus. The refusal of Trump and his “MAGA” followers to wear masks, avoid crowds, social distance, practice proper hand washing, and maintain increased sanitation measures has contributed to the spread of the disease. Other nations are returning to normalcy while U.S. cases continue to rise, and our mortality rate is the highest in the world. His vaccine distribution plan has also failed miserably, yet  his supporters, who originally called the inoculation unsafe, now praise him for allegedly getting us the vaccine.
  7. Trump is the only “president” to be impeached TWICE for criminal acts.
  8. The only “president” in history to be banned by social media outlets.
  9. His orange “comb over” and scowling face has been hard to tolerate and getting harder by the moment.
  10. Empty store shelves, devoid of groceries, cleaning products, and the ever popular toilet paper are directly related to Trump’s failure.
  11. The rampant racism, bigotry, and anti-Semitism he has promoted will leave a stain on our country. His bigotry has encouraged attacks on places of worship, the Muslim community, blacks, Mexicans and Asians.  White supremacy and white privilege pushed to the forefront by his brainwashed supporters.  This deeply failed man, this narcissistic, misogynistic, white supremacist, and self-proclaimed “nationalist” is a hero to his supporters. Trump’s blatant racist mentality has given license and fringe popularity to those with hate in their hearts who wish to commit atrocious and senseless acts of violence in the name of “patriotism.” Trump cannot even decide if those followers are “patriots” or an embarrassment to him.  His frightening attitude has taken our country back to times well before the fight for our civil rights.
  12. Donald J. Trump and his “fan-actics,” including figures like Franklin Graham, have committed acts of blasphemy, claiming this serial adulterer, who knows nothing about the Christian religion, boasts of grabbing women by their private parts, has multiple rape accusations against him, who holds a Bible he doesn’t read in front of a church he doesn’t attend, is “God’s chosen one,” equating Trump to the Lord Jesus Himself. His supporters falsely claim he has done more for Christianity than any other President, when actually what he has done is made a mockery of faith. His actions in no way reflect a “godly man” – they are much closer to an Antichrist.
  13. He is the only “president” or presidential candidate who has refused to release his tax returns.
  14. Donnie-Do-Nothing brought us the first “FLOTUS” seen with a staple in the area of her navel. Unfortunately that was all the coverage she had.
  15. He took credit for the economic stimulus checks, insisting his signature be on the check, as if the money was coming out of his own pocket. While he is largely responsible for the economic decline we are facing due to the coronavirus. A virus which he claimed would just disappear. He disbanded the task force formed by the Obama administration to prevent, address, and combat pandemics.
  16. Wildly unsubstantiated beliefs such as power generation windmills causing cancer.
  17. He misappropriated the words of a popular, strong female motion picture character (Elle Woods, “Legally Blonde”) as his own.
  18. Moments of total idiocy were a daily head shaker. Whether it was his inexplicable spelling mistakes or crazy statements such as saying the Revolutionary soldiers protected the “airports” at the time of the Revolutionary War.
  19. He called our beautiful, accomplished, and intelligent Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris a “nasty” woman. A term he often uses for women of strength and power.
  20. He has poked fun at pet owners – he made a comment to the effect of, “Can you see me walking a dog on the White House lawn? I don’t think so.” Dogs across America are howling a sigh of relief at this revelation, while kitty cats fear being grabbed.   The only seemingly decent thing I can ever recall Trump doing is signing the bill making animal cruelty a felony.
  21. At a rally he viciously and publicly made fun of a disabled journalist.
  22. He consistently denounces the media and journalism in general as reporting “fake news” when they do not agree with his convoluted, conflicted viewpoints.
  23. Donald Trump played golf while our nation has faced the most challenging threat to our safety in over 100 years.
  24. “Bunker boy” is a big bully and spoiled brat.
  25. Trump has attempted to cut or destroy Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the Affordable Care Act, nutrition assistance, and other social programs with no regard to the millions of senior citizens, disabled, working poor, single parents, and military families that rely on them, claiming “socialism” is Communism, when in fact he aligns himself with dictators.
  26. He shares an overwhelming proportion of “hawk”-type personality traits with Adolf Hitler.
  27. Trump and his attorneys have filed numerous frivolous and baseless lawsuits, claiming President-elect Joe Biden and his supporters “stole” the election. The lie so big that AG Bill Barr and federal judges appointed by Trump saw no merit in his accusations.  Joe Biden received  81,283,985 a record number of votes, more than any other presidential candidate in history. Trump and at least one of his attorney’s Sidney Powell is being sued for defamation by Dominion voting machines and a software firm who provided electronic voting programs.  Of course, then there was the interference by Russia in the 2016 presidential election.
  28. His racist border wall…
  29. A ban on Muslims entering the country, prevented needed health care workers from reentering the country. The ban kept an innocent woman from visiting an ill family member residing legally in the United States. The stories are many and they are heartbreaking.
  30. Donald Trump said he would date his own daughter. How sick is that?
  31. He wanted to spend large amounts of American government money on a dictator-like military parade.
  32. Churches, schools, theaters, cinemas, graduations, weddings, and sporting events closed or canceled en masse until further notice.
  33. He told the nation to inject or drink bleach as a cure for COVID-19.
  34. Trump laughingly called himself “a very stable genius”.
  35. His unnerving Twitter rants.
  36. Supporters claim that Trump is the only “president” who has ever run the country like a business. I would like to point out that Trump was a failed businessman,  who filed for bankruptcy  four to six times, depending on the source cited.
  37. Trump pardoned Blackwater contractor war criminals responsible for the massacre of innocent unarmed civilian Iraqis.
  38. He wanted to draw down all United States forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, despite the security risk. Eventually he left only 2500 troops each in both countries. These numbers still have no strategic sensibility with terrorists threats ongoing. Iraq and Afghanistan now have less American service personnel than Spain.
  39. His threat to veto COVID-19 relief forced the American people to spend the holiday season in stressed concern. Many feel they have been left to fend for themselves as we faced the very worst of this pandemic.
  40. He discussed the preposterous and frightening idea of a martial law declaration so he could get a new election in certain swing states.
  41. His ludicrous claim that, “our country is full and we cannot accept any more immigrants.”
  42. Trump said he wanted to fistfight his presidential opponent, the peaceful and physically fit Joe Biden.
  43. While stupidly and improperly walking in front of Queen Elizabeth during his visit to the United Kingdom he stopped forcing the 92-year-old monarch to step around “The Dumb Donald”.
  44. His present-tense comment about a gentleman who passed away in 1895, which still baffles our brains. “Frederick Douglass is an example of somebody who’s done an amazing job and is getting recognized more and more, I notice.”
  45. Trump is a sore loser, threatening to skip the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden and Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris, and to leave the country. It looks like he is finally going to make America great…

Donald Trump: A Criminal Candidate

Trump desperately holding onto power despite substantial loses at the ballot box.

Donald Trump: A Criminal Candidate

D. S. Mitchell

Looking Back

In 2004, a British tabloid asked brazenly on its front page, when announcing the news that George W. Bush was re-elected, “How can 59,054,087 people be so dumb?” By this time the world had observed the invasion and occupation of Afghanistan in 2001, and then in 2003, Iraq.  It didn’t take long to see that George W. was no George H. W. From the beginning of his administration, George W. was under the spell of the neo-cons. From day one he was led around by the nose by  VP Dick Cheney and associates. Still, Americans re-elected him. If the British tabloid’s question was rude, it was at least a legitimate question.

The Rude Question Comes Up Again

That “rude” question has resurfaced in 2020. The counties and states are still counting, but as of November 21, 2020, 73,781,603 people have voted for president Donald Trump, which amounts to 47.2 percent of the total votes so far counted. The same sources show 79,816,557 Americans voted for Joe Biden, which is approximately 51.1 percent of the total votes counted. The president-elect, Joe Biden, is kicking Trump’s butt, leading by over 6 million votes. But, those numbers go against the Trump plan. So, it is time to recount and recount and do anything possible to overturn the election or undermine the validity of Joe Biden’s presidency.

Is It That Bad?

A majority of Americans,  especially Black, Brown, Native Americans, Asians, and other marginalized communities, who are at the mercy of this country’s historic, systemic, police abuse and seemingly incurable racism, voted Donald Trump out of office. I want us to celebrate that so many Americans voted to oust his criminal ass, but there is much need for introspection and intense soul searching about those who feverishly supported him, and still support him in his fight to remain in office.

A Cup Of Coffee

I’m ready this morning to have a cup of coffee, eat an apple and reflect on why more than 73, 701,667  Americans would chose a man like Donald Trump to lead this country? His incompetence and stupidity is legendary. Some close to him have called him a “fucking moron.” These words come from those who know him best, yet these voices are ignored by his minions.

Nothing Moves His Base

For the last several days I’ve scoured old newspaper and magazine articles putting together a list of the known criminal activities of Donald Trump. Although well-known to his followers, his criminality seems to have no effect on their loyalty or their intoxicated enthusiasm. Monster flags whipping off the back of pickup trucks advertise their loyalty to Trump, not the United States. Wake up guys. Trump is a fraud and you are his biggest suckers. Get real, please, Trump and his whole crew belongs in Sing-Sing, not the Oval Office.

The Habit Of Corruption

Trump is no stranger to corruption and criminality. He has been embedded in it his entire life. As President, he’s just taken it to a new level. The Trump administration is without a doubt the most corrupt presidency in American history. No wonder he keeps screaming “fake news” when answering reporter’s questions about his scandal ridden administration. He desperately needs to undermine the legitimacy of the fourth estate.  Donald John Trump has so much to hide.  If his devout followers would listen to the information that is available everywhere, they would drop him like the proverbial a hot potato. But, for some reason they are both deaf and blind to the truth. Truth matters, and Trump couldn’t find truth with both hands. Just to refresh the reader on Trump’s criminal history:

It All Started With Daddy Trump

1.) Donald and his father blatantly participated in housing discrimination against people of color and they were sued by the Justice Department.
2.) The Mafia and Donald worked together through the construction trades in New York city.
3.) He hired undocumented Polish workers to rehab the Trump Tower and then refused to pay them.
4.) Trump was fined $750,000 for anti-trust violations during his attempt to take over a rival casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Trump Pre-Hospitalization Timeline

EDITORIAL: Trump Pre-Hospitalization Timeline

By D. S. Mitchell

In The Early Morning Hours

I had gone to bed late Thursday (10/01/20) night and was sort of watching TV while sort of dozing. It was early a.m. Friday (10/02/20) on the west coast, when Kaisie Hunt, on her show “Way Too Early,”  made a dramatic announcement.  Close advisor to the president, Hope Hicks had tested positive for Coronavirus. The name of Hope Hicks caused me to sit up and take notice. Over the next couple hours information  dribbled in; and eventually we got word that Donald J. Trump, president of the United States had tested positive for COVID-19. Yikes and oh, my! I got up and made a cup of coffee. I knew I had to hit Twitter.  Where the prevailing sentiment seemed to be, “Wouldn’t it be funny if Trump died from COVID-19?” and “big surprise, he doesn’t even wear a mask or social distance.”

Prayers And Best Wishes

Okay, I have to admit I have a greater than normal share of cynicism. I nearly barfed when I heard all the TV hosts wishing the president “health and happiness” and the proverbial “thoughts and prayers.” I know, I know. Be nice.  But, really… here is a man holding super spreader rallies, Rose Garden COVID-19 parties, insulting Biden and others for mask wearing, undermining the postal service, threatening our very democracy, refused to admit he would give up power if he loses the election, has in my view at least, encouraged armed insurrection, and I am now supposed to say, “oh, poor Donnie.” To be blunt, fuck that shit! I will not.

WORLD ON FIRE

Trevor K. McNeil & D. S. Mitchell

Better Angels

Humans are complex. Neither angels nor devils, but something in between. As with many things it is a continuum. Abraham Lincoln understood this perfectly and touched on it when he referred to “the better angels of our nature.” As with human nature, so with human action. Which assists in understanding our history of civil disobedience. Particularly when it happens to turn ugly. Such as when legitimate protests based on genuine grievances turn into deadly riots.

Rebels With A Cause

Henry David Thoreau was a vocal abolitionist, anti-expansionist and a  conductor of the underground railroad. In 1849, Thoreau, an infamous proto-anarchist, published his essay “Resistance to Civil Government”.  “Anarchist” in this case meaning classical Anarchism. A political ideology that accepts rules, but opposes the notion of rules in a top-down coercive system, where using lethal violence, or the threat thereof, to keep the populace under control.  Thoreau advocated “resistance to an unjust state.” He said, “I ask for, not at once no government, but at once a better government”.  Thoreau said “the government that governs best is that which governs least.” Though notice the phraseology. Government. To govern. There being a vital difference between a government and an administration.

 Historical Perspective

America has a long, rich history of civil disobedience. “Fight the Power” being the unofficial national motto. Setting the American Revolution aside, one of the places this first came into focus was in lower Manhattan in 1863. From July 13th to July 16th, during the throes of the American Civil War, hundreds of citizens, many of them immigrants took to the streets to protest the draft that would send them to fight the Confederacy. What started out relatively peacefully soon grew into a large violent, three-day riot. In the end an estimated 120 people lay dead.

Guilt By Association

Guilt By Association

A Little Bit of History Repeating

History is more of a cycle than a straight line. Those who have looked at it closely recognize trends have a tendency to repeat. Themes and progress ebb and flow in the oceans of time. Sadly, there are some areas where the water is darker than others. One such dark spot in the ocean of time is the anti-Chinese sentiment in North America.

An Ill Wind

One of the more damaging aspects of coronavirus, aside from the death toll, is the misinformation being spread about it. One being the Anti-Chinese sentiment, fostered and fueled by President Trump and his surrogates. Attempting to redirect blame from his colossal mismanagement of the pandemic response Trump continues his attacks on China. Our boneheaded and close to illiterate president regularly promotes the idea that the virus “came from China.”

Historical Reference

Did it spread through China first? Yes. Do we know for a fact that it is where the virus originated? Hell no. In fact, the Chinese point an angry finger to the United States military. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARSCoV-2) and coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) is new and poorly understood. The prevailing theory is that the original carrier was a bat. I’m not sure if you’ve ever noticed, but bats fly. Over a fair bit of distance. As a historical reminder the 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic did not originate in Spain, but rather Kansas and was spread by American soldiers.  Not that it matters anyway. The country of origin not nearly as important as how to stop the spread of SARS CoV-2 and cure the disease among those who contract it.

The Electoral College Problem

The Electoral College Problem

By D. S. Mitchell

Losing While Winning

I believe whoever wins the most popular votes should become president of the United States. Unfortunately, with the Electoral College system that is not what happens. Twice in the last five elections the candidate that became president of the United States lost the popular vote. Donald Trump, won by less than 80,000 votes in four key electoral college states. He simultaneously lost the national popular vote by nearly 3 million votes.

The GOP Solution

The Electoral College system has become a tool for the Republicans in their effort to lock in one party control of government. Elie Mystal in a recent editorial in The Nation magazine wrote the GOP solution to changing demographics is to “forge a new theory of government where the rule by a white minority can withstand the popular will”. The nature of that effort was clear during Trump’s recent impeachment trial. Republicans desperate to acquit Trump wrapped their arms around a group of discredited legal theories. The Senators embraced a view of executive power and privilege, that ultimately denies our democracy and anoints a king.

Trump Impeachment: Agony & Ecstasy

The Senate of the United States is about to acquit president Trump of charges brought against him by the House of Representatives

The Republican Senate is about to acquit Trump of 1) abuse of power and 2) obstruction of Congress.

Trump Impeachment:

Agony & Ecstasy

The Agony

It seems the Trump impeachment has been going on forever.  The never ending developments, obstruction, ignored reality, AAAAGGGGHHHHH!!!! That’s me screaming. And we unfortunately know, that no matter the evidence the Senate will ignore it. Some days I can’t stand reading all this garbage and have to stop scanning the internet.  Apparently, if you’re Republican no matter Trump’s guilt, the offense isn’t bad enough.  Voter tampering isn’t serious enough.  AAAAGGGGHHHH!!!! That’s me screaming, again.

Phone Call Perfection

The absurdity of the Trump defense that his July 25th, 2019 call to Ukrainian President Zelensky was “perfect,” makes me want to kick a stump but I don’t want to break my foot.  Trump’s plot to withhold needed financial aid from a desperate Ukraine had two goals. First, he wanted the Ukrainians to announce an investigation into his political rival, Joe Biden and his son Hunter. Secondly, Trump wanted to implicate the Ukraine in the 2016 election tampering instead of the Russians. Both goals are outrageous and corrupt. Nothing serious enough to have an impeach hearing over.  WTF?  Sorry, I can’t think of anything more serious than election fraud.  Back in a minute, I have to hurl.

Overturn Valid Election

Seriously!  Back to AAAAGGGGHHHH!!!!  I’m on the back porch, screaming. The Republican idea that the entire Trump impeachment process is to overturn an election is a fairy tale.  Why on earth would anyone with a brain think Pence is a prize?  We all want to get rid of Trump so we can have someone even worse?  I hear this stupid argument day in and day out. I guess I’m wondering why America would want to overturn an election.  The Dems could have just ignored all the crimes and waited until the election if that was the goal.  Let’s get it straight, Trump was impeached because he’s a cheat, a criminal, and a dumb ass clown.

Loyalty to Trump Not U.S.

What the F!  One of the criticisms I have of the House Manager’s prosecution is that no one mentioned that the witnesses against Trump are Republicans.  Most of them Trump appointees.  Trump is so ‘effn dumb.  All of the audio, video and eyewitness testimony has been filed by Republicans.  Trump is the kind of boss that would make me spend all my time devoted to malicious compliance.  All while looking for a better job.  The idea that even being a lifelong Republican isn’t important because your loyalty now has to be to Trump.  Trump only.  If you haven’t kissed the royal ring, and the royal ass you aren’t Trumpian enough. Seriously, we are looking at cult behavior.

The Ecstasy

Whatever the outcome of the Trump impeachment hearing, this has been an extremely damaging scenario for the president. Day after day new information is leaked to the media pointing to Trump’s guilt and I presume this will continue ad nauseam until he is out of office. I call it the scandal a day presidency. So there is definitely some good with the bad in this whole drama.  Sometimes I just think if we just sit back and wait Trump will accidentally confess to something even Republicans believe is impeachable.  “Hey, Donald!  I found some more rope, you want some?”

Twitter

The Trump impeachment has sent the president’s Twitter account into overdrive.  He has been spouting idiocies on his Twitter feed for years but the recent ones are a joy to behold.  I enjoy watching him embarrass himself day after day with poor grammar, lousy spelling and idiotic ramblings,  When I’m tired and can’t sleep, I read Trump tweets instead of counting sheep.  Then when I do fall asleep it’s with a smile on my face.  What a moron!  By the way, he has tweeted Schiff, Pelosi and Bolton are all “going to pay for their part in the Trump impeachment”.  His Twitter feed is full of threats, hate and lies.

Obstruction Shenanigans

His recent admission that “we have all the material.  They don’t have the material,” is scary. He is talking here, about evidence. This is an admission of obstruction of Congress. Trump has made obstructing the impeachment process into an art form.  It really scares me that the Republicans are willing to aid the president in suppressing the voices of fact witnesses.  Especially since they have to throw so many loyal Republicans (Vindman, Sondland, Bolton, Mattis, Kelly) under the bus to protect the President.

Comedy Gold

The Trump impeachment is comedy gold for the late night comedians  As you can see, I’m trying to keep a good sense of humor until the next election.  Trump isn’t going to be removed from office until then.  Hopefully, this is Trump and his Republican followers last hurrah. We will have to wait for the last laugh until Trump is out of office and the Congress has been cleansed of the Trump cultists, but I believe it is coming.  I know most Americans can’t keep focused on anything for more than a week, but I am hopeful that, on this issue, the issue of Trump’s character will be the major topic in the 2020 election.  There is a price for ignoring the 63% of Americans who wanted witnesses called and documents presented.  The majority of Americans wanted to see an actual trial. Vote and make sure we, the People, have the last laugh.

The Trump Impeachment Trial

Now we come to the impeachment trial phase and Republican obfuscation.  Republicans say they have no need for documents or witnesses.  They heard the House testimony and it’s not enough.  They’re going to acquit Trump.  With that in mind, new evidence, such as the phone records by Lev and Igor and Bolton’s book revelations are being blatantly ignored.  So annoying.  Join me in my prayer that Mitch McConnell, Rand Paul and Lindsey Graham develop anal warts.

The Fallout

Republicans are playing with impeachment fire.  The arrogance of the Republican lawmakers is alarming.  They are literally willing to ignore, and in some cases bury the evidence, but the public is not.  Since 51-56% of Americans believe Trump should be impeached and removed from office the Republicans risk losing their Senate majority in the upcoming election.  All in all this could be a very good year for Democrats and November may give them the House, Senate and the Presidency.  If we don’t F it up!
